5 unforgettable deliveries that changed a WC match
There may be many brilliant innings, a dozen batting cameos that still inspire awe, but do you remember five unforgettable deliveries that changed the course of these WC matches?
BALWINDER SANDHU[1] TO GORDON GREENIDGE
1983 Final, Lord's
Still memorable after all these years. With a paltry 183 to defend against West Indies, India needed to strike early. Sandhu ambled in close to the stumps and delivered a good length ball. WI opener Greenidge saw no danger as he shaped up to leave it. Except, Sandhu made it jag back sharply. Greenidge knew he was foxed, he tried to pad it away but the off-stump had been disturbed.
1992 Final, Melbourne
The ball was reversing, so Pakistan skipper Imran Khan gave Akram a go in the 35th over to break the fifth-wicket partnership between Neil Fairbrother and Allan Lamb. Akram went round the wicket and landed the ball on a length. Lamb was undecided whether to go back or forward and played for the in-dipper but the ball straightened off the deck. The game turned completely in Pakistan’s favour the next ball as Akram dismissed Chris Lewis bowled with another stunning in-swinger.

SHOAIB AKHTAR[4] TO STEPHEN FLEMING
1999 Semi-final, Old Trafford
HARBHAJAN SINGH[5] TO UMAR AKMAL
2011 Semi-final, Mohali
Umar Akmal was taking the game away from India with a busy innings as Pakistan gained some momentum in their chase of 261. Harbhajan Singh proved to be the game-changer. The off-spinner came round the wicket and got the better of Akmal with a perfect arm ball which zipped off the turf. Akmal played all around to get bowled as Pakistan were reduced to 142/5. With that India regained the upper hand.
SHANE WARNE[6] TO HERSCHELLE GIBBS
1999 Semi-final, Edgbaston
Chasing a modest 213, South Africa were cruising at 48 for no loss – a stage perfect for a Shane Warne special. The Aussies had just scraped through the Super Six against the same opponents and they had smelt blood. Warne’s loop and drift pinged Gibbs to the crease. The ball pitched outside leg and off the rough turned viciously across a dumbfounded Gibbs to clip the off-bail. “Come on!!!” roared Warne. It inspired an Aussie comeback where he took three more wickets as the Aussies edged the Proteas in a thrilling tie.

Rebuilding the innings, Stephen Fleming and Roger Twose took New Zealand to 152/three. Back came Shoaib Akhtar in the 34th over.
