Governor ESL Narasimhan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Jagan. DMK President MK Stalin and Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao were also present at the swearing-in ceremony.
Jagan, is the son of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. He was earlier a Member of Parliament from Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency.
The YSR Congress got an absolute majority in 175-member strong assembly, ousting Chandrababu Naidu-led Telugu Desam Party from power in the state.
The party won 151 seats out of 175, whereas opposition TDP's strength was drastically reduced from 102 in the 2014 Assembly elections to a mere 23.
YSR Congress polled 49.9% votes, while TDP got a 39.2% vote share. One seat went to the Jana Sena Party led by actor-turn politician Pawan Kalyan.
YSR Congress also bagged 22 Lok Sabha seats out of 25 in the state, while TDP could get only three seats.
While northern states have seen nearly a dozen father-son duo as CMs, there are just two instances in the southern parts. Karnataka was the first state to see an ex-CM’s son sit on the chief minister’s chair when HD Kumaraswamy became the chief minister. Kumaraswamy’s father HD Deve Gowda served as the chief minister from 1994 to 1996. On the other hand, Jaganmohan Reddy’s father YS Rajasekhara Reddy served as the chief minister of AP from 2004 till his death in 2009.
Except for Jaganmohan Reddy, sons or daughters of all chief ministers have either ended up becoming ministers or have stayed away from politics. Jaganmohan Reddy himself was away from active politics till the 2009 election when he contested from Kadapa Lok Sabha constituency and won with a record majority.
