Central, south India to get good rainfall; north may see deficit: IMD

NEW DELHI: Sticking to its prediction of a normal monsoon this year despite the likely presence of El Nino, the India Meteorological Department on Friday said central and south India are likely to get good rains during the season but east and north may see slightly subdued rainfall.
Releasing its second stage monsoon forecast, IMD said El Nino’s presence is likely to be felt in the first half of the rainy season but rainfall will improve thereafter. The department has projected a 5% rain deficit across the country in the month of July, which it said will reduce to 1% in August.
Overall, monsoon rainfall through the season (June to September) is likely to be 96% of the long period average (LPA), which is in the lower end of the normal range (96% to 104%), India’s official weather agency said.
“Although there’s a good chance that El Nino will prevail through the monsoon season, it is weak and declining. Its impact on the monsoon will decrease as the season wears on,” said D Sivananda Pai, IMD’s lead monsoon forecaster.
IMD’s projections will, by and large, come as a relief to the agriculture sector which continues to depend heavily on monsoon rainfall. In the past couple of years, farm output has grown despite below-normal monsoons.
According to the forecast, east and northeast India is likely to get below normal rainfall at 91% of LPA while northwest India — a region comprising the entire north, including Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh — may receive 94% rainfall, which is in the negative side of its normal range.
The projection for central and south India is much brighter. The central region is likely to have absolutely normal rainfall (at 100% of LPA) while the south may get around 97% of its average.
