Yeddyurappa suffers jolt as BJP drops plan to bring down HDK govt
After attending Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, Yeddyurappa told reporters in Bengaluru on Friday: “The party leadership has issued us a diktat not to destabilise the government.” The central leadership passed the crisp message to him in New Delhi on Thursday at a meeting after the Modi team’s inauguration.
BJP’s decision has brought relief to beleaguered chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, who had been reaching out to Congress rebels to stop them from walking into BJP’s trap. The development comes as a second setback for Yeddyurappa in 48 hours.
On Wednesday, PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah picked Karnataka members for the cabinet reportedly from factions opposed to the Lingayat strongman.
The Karnataka BJP leader refused to speculate on possible mid-term assembly elections, and said he has not abandoned his “chief ministerial ambitions completely yet”. He said the party was not in a hurry to grab power and the state unit will continue to function as a responsible opposition party.
With the party senior leadership not keen on installing its government in the state, sources claimed the days of Yeddyurappa as state party chief are numbered.
Interestingly, Yeddyurappa smelt a forced Operation Lotus, accusing Congress leader Siddaramaiah of sending across four of his MLAs to the BJP and trying his hand at dethroning the coalition government. “We know Siddaramaiah’s game plan. We won’t allow the plan to succeed at BJP’s expense,” Yeddyurappa said and claimed the central leadership, too, had information on the Congress strategy.
