Railway staff set to get 78 days’ wages as bonus

NEW DELHI: The Union cabinet on Wednesday approved productivity-linked bonus equivalent to 78 days’ wages to over 11.52 lakh non-gazetted railway employees. This is for the sixth consecutive year that productivity-linked bonus is being given to railway employees.
Union minister Prakash Javadekar said the bonus for financial year 2018-19 would cost the exchequer Rs 2024.40 crore.
The announcement of the bonus payment comes ahead of the upcoming festive season when the government is banking on revival market sentiments.
Payment of the bonus is aimed at motivating a large number of railway employees to improve their performance and enhance productivity levels further, besides maintaining industrial peace, an official statement said.
However, railway unions have claimed that they had expected an enhanced bonus.
