Hand over Gandhi Ashram land, Centre tells trusts

AHMEDABAD: Protests have erupted among trust members and ashram residents, against the Central government’s directives, seeking acquisition of all trust land and immovable property on the 32 acres of Gandhi Ashram and its surroundings, to either the Gujarat government or the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The Centre’s move is ostensibly to develop a “world-class memorial” at the historical site.
It is for the first time since Independence such notices have been issued. The notices claim that the trust will be compensated with “adequate land and monetary compensation” including a separate apartment section for the 200-odd Ashram residents, some of whom were settled there by Bapu himself.
TOI is in possession of the notice from the Central government’s Khadi and Village Industries Commissionto the Khadi Gramudyog Prayog Samiti .
