NRC-excluded not 'stateless', to enjoy rights for now: MEA
Ministry of external affairs issued the clarification soon after Grandi issued a statement from Geneva appealing to India to ensure that "no one is rendered stateless by this action, including by ensuring adequate access to information, legal aid and legal recourse in accordance with the highest standards of due process".
MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "Those who are not in the final (NRC) list will not be detained and will continue to enjoy all the rights as before till they have exhausted all the remedies available under the law. It does not make the excluded person stateless."
He added that exclusion from NRC has no implication on the rights, entitlements and privileges enjoyed by a person. He said those excluded can appeal for inclusion before foreigners' tribunals and the judicial process will commence only after the appellate period is over.
