Scrap surrogacy law: Church body to Centre

KOCHI: A day after the Union cabinet approved the introduction of Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2019 that aims to prohibit commercial surrogacy in India, a committee of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council on Thursday demanded that the Centre should not enact any law that supports any kind of surrogacy.
“Regularisation wouldn’t be enough, what is important is that the law itself be scrapped. A human life cannot be seen as a product developed in a lab or as a commodity being sold in the market. A life is a gift of God. God is the creator; the couple are procreators,” said a statement from the pro-life committee of KCBC.
