Assam to release 'foreigners' detained for over 3 years

The Assam government[1] has notified the release of "declared foreigners" who have spent more than three years in detention centres, subject to them meeting a set of conditions fixed by the Supreme Court[2] on May 10. The six detention camps in Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Tezpur house 938 inmates, of whom 335 are eligible for release. They are required to furnish bonds with sureties of Rs 1 lakh each from two Indian citizens along with their proposed residential addresses[3] and biometric details[4]. Had they been alive, 15 detainees who died of illness over the past three years would have made it to that list.
