Chandrayaan-2 deputy project director taught village students to fund his education

Chandrakanta Kumar, a Bengal farmer's scientist son, is playing a key role in Chandrayaan-2. As deputy project director, he's responsible for the radio frequency system for communication between the lunarcraft and Earth station.
A native of Gurup village in Hooghly, the 42-year-old, who is an ardent follower of Swami Vivekananda, joined Isro in 2001. His younger brother, Sasikanta, is also an Isro scientist. Coincidentally, both were named after Moon. Chandrakanta, who taught village students to fund his education, studied till Class V from a school in his village. He went on to finish his secondary and higher secondary studies from Khajurdaha high school. He completed his physics honours from Ramakrishna Mission Vidya Mandir and later finished an MSc and MTech.
"Though he was quite an introvert, he was serious about studies right from Class I," Chandrakanta's teacher Asit Baran Chakraborty said. His parents Madhusudan and Asima were disappointed when a glitch aborted Chandrayaan-2 launch on July 15. After the successful launch on July 22, his father hugged his neighbours.
