“I belong to a remote village of Bodovada in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district. We were so poor that getting a rice meal daily was a big deal. We used to go to our neighbour’s house to drink butter milk. Even when I was in college, I used to work in our field and bring water from a storage tank for irrigation,” Rao told TOI.
“My father is now 90 plus and still lives in the village. My four brothers look after our agricultural field,” he said. Despite all the hardships, Rao completed a BSc (physics), MSc (electronics) and later a PhD in physics.
