Court to hear plea on tweaks to PMLA via money bill

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear Congress MP Jairam Ramesh’s plea challenging all the amendments made in Prevention of Money Laundering Act by the Centre since 2015 as it was done through the route of money bill. A bench of Justices S A Bobde and B R Gavai issued notice to the Centre and sought its response to his plea.
The politician had approached the apex court after his petition was dismissed by the Delhi high court in February. Senior advocate P Chidambaram, appearing for Ramesh, contended that the process of amendments was wrong as it could not be done through money bill and the law should have been amended by way of introducing an ordinary bill in Parliament.
