In Delhi, BJP chief Manoj Tiwari renewed his demand for NRC and said he will meet Union home minister Amit Shah soon to press for it. He claimed the situation in Delhi is "dangerous" due to the presence of a "large number" of illegal immigrants including Bangladeshis and Rohingya who have been found involved in "criminal activities".
BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said NRC should be implemented across the country to "prevent nefarious designs of illegal immigrants, who pose a threat to India's internal security".
BJP leaders in Telangana demanded the NRC exercise be started in Greater Hyderabad from September 17, the sensitive Hyderabad Liberation Day. "It should be implemented in Hyderabad as illegal immigrants are a major threat to the city. Thousands of Bangladeshis and Rohingya have been staying here illegally," Goshamhal MLA T Raja Singh said .
In Bihar, BJP and its students wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) have strongly demanded holding of a citizenship registration exercise for a NRC.
Though Odisha is yet to take a decision on whether to go for NRC, a recent letter by the forest department to the state home department to take a call on the move, particularly in Kendrapada district, has set the cat among the pigeons.
Topographically, tribal-dominated Jharkhand has little in common with Assam, which shares a long, porus borders with Bangladesh, but the demand for a NRC-like exercise here was until recently the loudest here. However, the clamour for it's quick introduction seems to have withered after the Lok Sabha elections, when the NDA won 12 of 14 seats in the state.
