Kamal Nath meets Sonia amid talk of his tussle with Scindia
NEW DELHI/BHOPAL: A closed door meeting between Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath on Friday morning set off speculation that structural changes in the MP Congress Committee may be in the offing.
Congress's Madhya Pradesh unit has been agog over tension between Jyotiraditya Scindia and the incumbent leadership - Kamal Nath and Digvijay Singh - and the former Guna MP's threat that he will "look for other options" if he is not given a leadership position in the state.
Kamal Nath, who met Sonia at her residence, however, sought to play down the tussle, saying he did not think "Jyotiraditya Scindia is unhappy". He also said his discussions with the Congress chief was on the pending organisational reshuffle.
A party functionary from MP who did not wish to be named told TOI that the party had in July forwarded a set of names for the post of PCC president to AICC based on feedback from party cadres. There was popular demand, the leader said, for an OBC or a tribal leader to take charge as MP PCC chief. Among the names understood to be doing the rounds are Umang Shringar, Jitu Patwari and Ajay Singh, the son of Arjun Singh.
Sources also said that while a large section of the Congress leadership in MP - have backed Scindia's candidature, there is a view within that the clash of egos between the CM, Digvijay Singh and Scindia, if he is made PCC chief, may lead to instability in the government.
Even though Scindia was appointed chairman of the Congress screening committee for Maharashtra earlier this month, there has been speculation over his resentment, a sign of which was apparent in his recent comments supporting the government on its decision to abrogate Article 370 and revoke special status to J&K.
