Yambem Biren and Narengbam Samarjit had held a media conference in London on Tuesday and declared Manipur an independent nation. Biren claimed that on March 14, 2012, members of the ‘Manipur state council’ and representatives of the state in the council had at the palace in Manipur formed a de jure government, which was running parallel to the de facto government.
“Manipur is a constitutional monarchy and the king is the god. His highness, the Maharaja of Manipur (titular king) Leishemba Sanajaoba is the constitutional head,” he said.
“The Indian government annexed Manipur in 1949 violating the Manipur Constitution Act,” Samarjit said. In his response to the claims, Sanajaoba strongly condemned the remarks. “I condemn this in the strongest terms. It was shocking that the two dragged my name into this. This will create a negative energy in society,” he said.
