Before its release in India, the film has been making a lot of headlines overseas due to various reasons. Apart from being granted a galore of good reviews from critics at various film festivals to the lead actor Phoenix walking out of an interview, here's when the film made headlines.
NO interviews at 'Joker' premiere
The much-anticipated film 'Joker' which is all set to release today in India grabbed everyone's attention when the makers of the film, Warner Bros denied press interviews during the film's premiere. While print and broadcast journalists were sent invites to cover the premiere of the film overseas, only photographers were allowed to cover the red carpet. Phoenix's character of Arthur Fleck aka Joker has been facing scrutiny for his character.
'A' certificate with no cuts for India release
Todd Phillip's directorial 'Joker' was cleared by the Indian censor board without any cuts and has been granted 'A' certificate. The much-awaited film of the year was also pre-poned to 2nd from 4th October. Apart from all the controversies that the film has been mired in, Phoenix's stunning performance has been hailed as Oscar-worthy. 'Joker' is all set to release on Gandhi Jayanti and will clash with Hrithik Roshan-Tiger Shroff's action flick and Chiranjeevi[3]'s periodic drama 'Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy'.
Warner Bros.[4] statement on 'Joker' controversy
Warner Bros. issued a statement in the wake of families of Aurora shooting victims voicing their concerns about the film's release. Addressing the issue of the movie glamorising a mass murderer, the studio claimed that the main character is not a hero. "Make no mistake: neither the fictional character Joker nor the film is an endorsement of real-world violence of any kind. It is not the intention of the film, the filmmakers or the studio to hold this character up as a hero," the statement read.
Furthermore, it read, "Gun violence in our society is a critical issue, and we extend our deepest sympathy to all victims and families impacted by these tragedies. Our company has a long history of donating to victims of violence, including Aurora, and in recent weeks, our parent company joined other business leaders to call on policymakers to enact bi-partisan legislation to address this epidemic. At the same time, Warner Bros. believes that one of the functions of storytelling is to provoke difficult conversations around complex issues."
Joaquin Phoenix walks out of an interview
Todd Phillips' film tells the original story of the iconic Batman as a villain and offers a more grounded approach to the flawed character. With all the fan-frenzy and the hype surrounding the film, lead actor Joaquin Phoenix walked out of an interview and didn’t return when he was quizzed about his take on the rising rates of gun violence in the United States in context to his film which honours a madman who goes on a murderous spree after being wronged by society.
Backlash despite good reviews
After raking in rave reviews from critics at the Venice and Toronto Film Festival, several are confident of it bagging Oscar glory, Joaquin Phoenix's performance as Arthur Fleck aka Joker became the talking point everywhere. But contrary to the positive response, 'Joker' also faced backlash for reports stating that the film will showcase a different version of Joker from his typical-cynical behaviour. Reports of the menacing and dangerous avatar of the titular character being shown in a sympathetic light irked a lot of fans, who were expecting their favourite character to get in his elements and go all guns blazing in Todd Phillips' film.
