Brain biopsies hold clue to death cause?
"The state government had asked IGIMS to suggest steps to find the cause of AES. Based on studies and deliberations on research done by agencies across the globe on the spread of AES in Muzaffarpur, we have recommended brain biopsies," IGIMS medical superintendent Dr Manish Mandal said. He said the exact cause of AES isn't yet known as most of the research has been based on blood samples.
On being asked why brain biopsies were not done in suspected AES cases, Dr Gopal Shankar Sahni, head of paediatrics at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital said: "Biopsies and other forms of autopsy are done only in the case of unnatural deaths. The AES cases were natural deaths."
