Landfall of cyclone Fani may not happen till May 4, may spare TN and Andhra coasts

NEW DELHI: The cyclone ‘Fani’[1] is likely to intensify into a ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm[2] on Tuesday and it could take shape of an ‘extremely severe’[3] one by Wednesday, but its landfall is not seen up to early morning of May 4[4].
“It has longer life-cycle and it is not going to impact significantly. There is less probability of its impact, if any, on Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Alert is, however, given for Odisha coast. Its landfall is not clearly seen up to May 4 early morning,” said K J Ramesh, director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
He told TOI on Monday that the IMD would review it again on Tuesday and issue alert accordingly. “We’ll issue an alert for West Bengal, if needed,” said Ramesh.
Existing models suggest that the ‘Fani’ may cross Odisha near Puri on May 4. “It (cyclonic storm over south-east Bay of Bengal) is very likely to move north-westwards till May 1 (Wednesday) and thereafter re-curve north-northeastwards towards Odisha coast,” said the ministry of earth sciences in a statement on ‘Fani’.
“Spoke to officials regarding the situation arising due to Cyclone Fani. Asked them to take preventive measures and be prepared to provide all possible assistance. Also urged them to work closely with governments of the affected states,”tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.
Meanwhile, the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), headed by cabinet secretary, took stock of the situation arising out of the cyclonic storm and put the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Coast Guard on “high alert”.
Chief secretaries/principal secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal attended the meeting through video conference. The NCMC will meet again on Tuesday to take stock of the situation.
“The state governments have adequately warned fishermen not to venture into the sea and highlighted that there is a seasonal ban on fishing in sea up to June 14 due to breeding season. State governments were advised to effectively enforce this ban,” said a government statement.
It said, “During the meeting, officers of all the concerned state governments confirmed their full preparedness to deal with any emerging situation arising out of the cyclonic storm.”
