Centre scans SC verdict fine print
Sources in the government said a team of officers is working on examining the order threadbare, including its technicalities and nuances, so that the trust can be constituted exactly as per the apex court’s verdict.
The country’s top law officers, including the attorney general, as well as the law ministry will be involved in consultations regarding modalities of the proposed trust.
It was not immediately clear which ministry will be the nodal agency for the Ram temple trust, said an official.
In a historic verdict on Saturday, a five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, ruled in favour of a Ram temple at the 2.77-acre ‘disputed’ site in Ayodhya.
The apex court directed the Centre to allot a five-acre alternative site at a “prominent” location in Ayodhya to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque.
In the same verdict, the apex court said, “The Central Government shall, within a period of three months from the date of this judgement, formulate a scheme under the Acquisition of Certain Area at Ayodhya Act, 1993.”
“The scheme shall envisage the setting up of a trust with a board of trustees or any other appropriate body,’’ it said.
“The scheme to be framed by the central government shall make all necessary provisions in regard to the functioning of the trust or body including on matters relating to the management of the trust, the powers of the trustees including the construction of a temple and all necessary, incidental and supplemental matters,” directed the spex court.
